Slow episode, but enjoyable nonetheless.
I was a bit surprised to hear Emma's narration when recounting Mrs. Stowner's past. One of the unique things about the show, I think, is how the viewer is offered very little window into Emma and William's thoughts. In previous episodes, we've gotten mirror and window gazing and nothing more.
So, in some ways, I was disappointed to hear Emma break out the narration in this episode. Granted, it wasn't genuine internal monologue, but it felt out of place all the same.
Whenever I look at Emma, I realise why William fell for her. She seems more mature and refined than her age might suggest. Heck, she seems more refined than Mrs. Stoner. Maybe it's the glasses or maybe it's her dark coloured clothes, I'm not sure. There is definitely something about Emma.
What I feared in the first episode will finally happen. William's father is coming to visit Mrs. Stoner. No doubt that he will discover William's feelings towards Emma sooner or later and that will be the start of trouble.
I was rather surprised to find out that Emma is only 20. She really seems a lot older. Have they said anything about her age before this episode?
I also always related those old guys back to the old guys from Cowboy Bebop, but now that one of them was actually given some character, I can't say that anymore. In a way, I'm disappointed...
I have not seen this, but is very curious about the choice of name and period; reminds me of Jane Austen's Emma
